Karkardooma Transit Oriented Development

Urban Design Studio 21'

Nestled in the eastern zone of the capital of India, New Delhi, Karkardooma is one of the posh and well-known residential areas in Anand Vihar region. Recently government of India reserved a 73.7 acre site for transit oriented development wedged to the Karkardooma Metro Station. In the course of Urban Design Studio, we drafted the site as a transit oriented development while also took into consideration the lack of public green spaces in Anand Vihar.

The aim was to create an urban environment that promotes social interaction among the people and enhances the traditional identity of the region. I order to achieve such an aim, it was essential to identify the major issue of the region, which was lack of public green spaces. Also, formulation of spaces was done in a way it could serve more than one functions. The fundamental elements and informality of social spaces was also retained in the project.

An organic form of land is formed by the two fly-overs which facilitate the movement of metros from one station to the other. The approach was to develop the this 4.3 acres of land into a green public space which serves both the residents of the surrounding development and the people looking through the metro windows. The road in between shall be instrumental in increasing the permeability of the site. This central plot also has a national museum and library and the green public space shall act as a social hub for the Anand Vihar region, fulfilling the need of green spaces. The scupture garden, maze garden and the musical fountain shall be the major leisure spaces.
